Who takes this course
For deck cadets who have completed at least 12 months' sea service and are working towards taking charge of a navigational watch. It is a mandatory STCW course in radar observation and the use of Automatic Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA).
After the course
It meets the STCW A-II/1 and A-II/2 requirement in radar and ARPA use for officers of the watch. Deck cadets typically continue on to the academy's Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) course before sitting their Second Mate certificate of competency exams.

Batch Strength Policy
As per D G Shipping Training Circular No 4 of 2018 MTI’s are directed not to conduct any batch, if the batch strength is less than 25% of the approved intake capacity granted by the Directorate.
