Who takes this course

Elementary First Aid is one of the mandatory basic STCW courses, aimed at seafarers holding an Indian Continuous Discharge Certificate and INDoS number who are entering sea service for the first time.

After the course

Completing this course and its exit exam satisfies one of the mandatory basic safety training requirements under STCW 2010 for going to sea, alongside the companion basic courses Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, Personal Survival Techniques and Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting. Officers who later take on medical duties onboard can follow it with Medical First Aid at the academy.

Course Overview

The Elementary First Aid (EFA) course is a mandatory training module under STCW 2010 for all seafarers. It equips participants with essential knowledge and practical skills to handle medical emergencies at sea. The course covers patient assessment, CPR, bleeding control, burn treatment, and safe transportation of the injured. Training includes hands-on simulations to build competence in providing immediate care until professional help is available.
