Pass in 10+2 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks; minimum 50% marks in English in 10th or 12th standard (other qualifying routes are listed below). Age limit: 17 to 25 years for general-category candidates, with higher limits for OBC, SC/ST and women. Also required: Valid IMU-CET Rank, Sponsorship, Medical Fitness Certificate and Passport.

Option 1: 10+2 (PCM) from a recognized board Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM) English: 50% minimum in either 10th or 12th standard Option 2: B.Sc. Degree B.Sc. in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or Electronics with Physics as a subject 60% minimum average in the final year Option 3: B.E./B.Tech. Degree From a recognized university with at least 50% marks in the final year Must also have more than 60% marks in PCM in 10+2

Who takes this course

For candidates who have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, or who hold a qualifying B.Sc. or engineering degree, meeting the required aggregate and English marks, and want to become a Deck Officer on merchant ships.

After the course

Graduates sign on as Deck Cadet and, after 18 months' sea service, become eligible for a B.Sc. (Applied Nautical Science) and can sit their Second Mate certificate of competency exams, progressing through 3rd Officer, 2nd Officer and Chief Officer towards command as Master. As deck cadets, candidates typically also take the academy's ROSC & ARPA and ECDIS simulator courses.
